XL Foods workers laid off again as food safety agency issues another beef recall
The union representing the workers says 800 of them are now off the job again, along with more than 1,200 employees who were laid off on the weekend
EDMONTON — Workers at an Alberta plant at the centre of a massive beef recall and E. coli scare have been laid off again as food safety officials review whether the facility can reopen.
The 800 workers were called into work Tuesday to finish cutting beef carcasses as part of a Canadian Food Inspection Agency assessment of how the XL Foods Inc. plant operates.
The United Food and Commercial Workers says the workers are now off the job again along with more than 1,200 employees who were laid off on the weekend.
Doug O'Halloran, UFCW Local 401 president, says the plant may reopen as early as Friday or Monday if the agency finds that XL Foods is following E. coli protocols.
On Tuesday night the CFIA announced yet another recall of beef from the plant, this time involving brands sold under different product names in B.C. and Alberta.
The recall of more than 1,800 products now involves 33 retail chains across Canada.

In Question Period on Wednesday, NDP leader Thomas Mulcair took aim at the Harper government over the extended recall and the subsequent layoffs in Alberta.
"[It's been] 44 days since the tainted meat crisis began," Mulcair said in the House of Commons.
"Yesterday, the Prime Minister completely sidestepped the principle of ministerial responsibility, saying that it wasn't the minister's fault because he wasn't the one doing inspections. Does the Prime Minister realize that his Minister of Agriculture is responsible because it is his program and his approach that has put the lives of Canadians in danger?"
Canada has one of the best food systems in the world, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said in response.
"The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is responsible for inspections," he said. "They decided to take several actions, including closing the plant and this will continue until it is clear the plant is safe."
Opposition parties have called for Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz to resign over what they call the mishandling of an E.coli outbreak that has led to a continuing recall of more than 1,900 beef products.
